read out loud
On launch day of their new book, "Words With Wings and Magic Things", illustrator and author team Doug Salati and Matthew Burgess paid a visit to PS 482 to share their new work with the students and staff. The children had a fantastic time listening to Matthew read and engaging in a creative exercise with the authors. A highlight was watching Matthew craft a poem based off a student's name and Doug creating a live illustration based on it. The energy in the room was electric, and each child left with a free copy of the new book to enjoy at home. We eagerly anticipate more visits from Doug and Matthew, along with many other talented authors in the months ahead—so stay tuned!

The event brought together an enthusiastic crowd of over 160 guests, featuring a lovely sit-down lunch prepared by the Gargiulo's team. Guests were treated to a delicious meal while enjoying heartfelt tributes to the honorees, who were presented with commendations by Councilman Justin Brannan and floral bouquets from NIA’s Founder and President Michael A. Bové. Everyone was captivated by a stunning flute performance by Eva Ding from the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra, which added a beautiful musical accompaniment to the special occasion. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie, laughter, and shared commitment to fostering the continued growth of women leaders in our community.

We are excited to share that Isabel Paz, our NIA Family Manager, joined forces with PS 247 to host another delightful community baby shower! New moms from the area gathered for an evening filled with delicious food, engaging games, and joyful connections. Participants competed in fun games, with prizes awarded to the winners. To honor and offer additional help and resources for our new mothers, all attendees received lovely gifts, including a baby swing, diaper dispenser, and toy/play stations to help support their growing families and members from Healthy Start at NYCHA provided our families with some information about their services. The atmosphere was vibrant and filled with excitement as new and expecting mothers bonded over their shared experiences. These events are a wonderful way to celebrate new beginnings while providing essential resources for expecting families in our neighborhoods. This event was supported by the grants from the Borough President Antonio Reynoso’s Brooklyn Community Baby Shower Fund and NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
